The Apocalypse is Upon Us!

When people visit the jam-space of Newmarket band Of An Apocalyptic Nature, they may notice two things: that they are standing in a large empty swimming pool, and that there are newspaper clippings covering one of the pool's deepest sides from top to bottom.

For about nine months, the band has used this unique space to practice, and now with a full lineup consisting of Andrew Gemmell, Nik Zilz, Zack Roitner, Dylan Gould, Cole Saul-Milligan, Daniel Iraheta, and unofficially Matt Scrimes, it is going to be the set of their new music video.

But why are all those newspaper clippings there? Well, they are part of the set and the inspiration for their new music video for their song Carnival of [T]errors, to be filmed on March 24.

"[The wall is] about the over-glorification of media," said Roitner, "We are not shy to criticize the media."

The wall contains articles and images regarding scandals, government conspiracies, death, and anything regarding murder or world injustice. This is a way of remembering all the people who have died around the world and do not get recognized by the media, the band said.

"Everyone looks at newspapers as an everyday thing, when really, these disturbing images that scare you come from there," said Gemmell.

Carnival of [T]errors ties into this theme of speaking out against propaganda since it is a song about the 9/11 terrorist attack. Roitner said that through the manipulation of the media, we are convinced by the media that the war against terrorism was necessary, and so was the killing of thousands of innocent people. The people in power have control and we can't do anything.

When writing Carnival of [T]errors, Roitner said that the famous poem The Fifth of November was definitely an inspiration for a verse in the song.

"I just changed two words in the poem because they were so similar to the situation. To the British the fifth of November is important, as 9/11 is important to the USA," said Roitner, "The treason and terror of people is forced to be part of history."

And that is how Carnival of [T]errors was born.

Although the band could be as serious as the serious message they carry, they have a fun side too.

"I have a thrill of going on stage and jumping around, and just watching people have fun," said Gemmell.

The band also said that they enjoy wearing fun things on stage such as a glowing skeleton sweater, a gas mask, and even a sombrero from Goodwill. What do you expect to see them sporting next? Guy Fawkes masks for everyone, they said.

Fun or serious, Of An Apocalyptic Nature carries an important message, which is what the band is all about: "We're aware of what you're doing and we're on to you. You can't manipulate people and do what you want out of pure greed - we're sick of it," said Roitner.
