Chatting with Fearless Fred from 102.1 The Edge Toronto

On October 31, 2014 I had the opportunity to interview 102.1 The Edge radio host at Toronto's Corus Entertainment. The Edge is Toronto's hottest station for alternative rock and Fearless Fred is one of the gems of the station. He's recently become the morning show host with Melani Mariani as well.

This is my first one-camera interview and I did everything by myself (host, script, direct, produce, edit, etc.). So without further ado, here it is:

Breaking News: Scary Kids Scaring Kids Singer Found Dead

Embedded image permalink

This just in - Tyson Stevens, frontman of Scary Kids Scaring Kids, has died at the age of 29.
The cause of Stevens' death is still unknown, but an anonymous source allegedly said that his girlfriend found him dead.

The news just broke on the Internet through numerous music professionals, only then to be reported by professional media.

Update and New Music From Bring Me The Horizon

Wow - it's been a while, hasn't it? I'm in my third year at Ryerson and life has been hectic. I've been immersed in my studies as well as doing my weekly radio show, The Plug-In, on The Scope at Ryerson. But alas, it's time for an update!

So Bring Me The Horizon's latest single, Drown, has leaked - with a music video to boot.

     Check it out below:

The English band seems to have completely abandoned their old metal core sound. Screams and growls are replaced with singing, and heavy breakdowns are replaced with chord progressions. In reading the YouTube comments and my Twitter feed, it seems that fans are either loving or hating this new music by Bring Me The Horizon.

Personally, I think the lyrics are quite beautiful, and the song in itself is good, but it's not something I want to hear when I choose to listen to Bring Me the Horizon. When I pick up my headphones and turn up the volume, I expect to hear aggressive guitars, heavy instrumentals, and  powerful vocals. Therefore, this is a complete 180 for the band, and for me, as the listener.

Fans are speculating that lead vocalist Oliver Sykes has damaged his vocal chords from years of screaming, but there hasn't been any confirmation or proof on this point.

The song was supposed to be released as a single come December, but the video is now out, apparently leaked.

What are your thoughts on the new sound? Comment below!

Suicide Silence Revealed to Have Had Group Therapy

Almost two years ago, Suicide Silence’s vocalist died in a motorcycle crash. Mitch Lucker’s death shocked his family, his friends, and his band, and since then, he has been remembered as one of the greats.

But, metalinjection.net only now reveals that the premature death of Lucker took a much worse toll on the band than anyone knew. The report says that the band took group therapy to cope with their loss.

Above: Suicide Silence pictured with new vocalist Eddie Hermida
Chris Garza, the band’s guitarist, said, “There were things I didn’t even realize I was thinking, about Mitch, until the therapist drew it out.”

The band entered group therapy as a recommendation from their manager because some of the members turned to drugs and alcohol to ease the pain of their loss - not healthy at all! Aside from getting all their thoughts and feelings about Lucker out, the band also let out some issues with the other members, and resolved them in therapy.

Garza also said, “Everybody that's been in a band knows that everybody has those things you don't talk about; things that are touchy subjects with different members that you just start to avoid.”

Suicide Silence is co-headlining a tour this fall across North America with The Black Dahlia Murder.

Can you keep a secret?

Sometimes the hunger of wanting to know a secret starves your curiosity so badly, you’d do anything to find out. That’s exactly what Toronto dance-punk band Death From Above 1979 did to their fans.

Does that sound like cruel torture to you? Well, actually, they had a pretty cool treat in store because the band played two SECRET local shows last week. On September third and fourth, the band set up a pop up shop at 952 Queen Street West in Toronto, which doubled as an album release party (and also featured limited edition merch!). They even had temporary tattoos; how's that for some edge?

Not only were these shows kept on the down low, but they were also FREE. How cool is that?Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Laughter x Music is The Best

Hello rockstars, blog readers, people, whoever you are! So people love a good laugh from YouTube, and today I'm not talking about funny cat videos.

I've recently discovered a really funny YouTuber named "Jarrod Alonge." Mosts of his videos are centred around comedy and the metal/hardcore/rock subculture. For instance, he has a hilarious video called "How to Mosh." But don't be fooled, this is no instructional video. It's a parody of the different moves moshers make at rock concerts (click HERE to watch it and have some laughs).

Jarrod Alonge also has a series of videos (he's up to 9 so far) about misheard lyrics in songs, featuring bands such as A Day to Remember, Underoath, Job For A Cowboy, and more.

Of course, none of his videos are to be taken seriously, as they are mostly parodies all meant for laughs. But The Rock Spot wanted to share with you this channel because it's musical and fun.

Best Werewolf Music Video Since MJ's "Thriller"

In the words of Isabel Hershko from Go Lightly Media, Dreamers' latest music video for their song "Wolves" is, "the sickest werewolf video since 'Thriller'."

This is a single from their upcoming debut record to be released this November called "This Album Does Not Exist" - very quirky. They're music breathes new life into the grunge genre, with a alternative, modern twist. So click above to watch the video and listen to the new song because it just might be your end-of-the-summer anthem.
