"Purge" rocks hard as 1st EP from Buried By Lakeshore

If you're a fan of deathcore music, you should definitely check out Buried By Lakeshore. This five-piece band hails from Toronto, Ontario and are fairly new, forming in September 2013. Their debut EP, "Purge", comes out June 25 and we already had the opportunity to listen to it here at The Rock Spot.

Purge contains four tracks, including two previously released tracks ("Construct" and "Isolation"). The track list is as follows: Construct, Recollections, Isolation, and Crown the Wretched.

The first track, Construct, started off with a heavy guitar riff right off the bat, and deep vocal growls, which really set the tone for this deathcore metal album. As opposed to American deathcore band, Chelsea Grin, and their higher-pitched vocal browns, this band's are much deeper in tone and pitch. In listening to Construct, I would compare the vocals to another phenomenal local band called "I Empire" when they had their previous vocalist, Nicky Bling. They're a little rough around the edges, but that's what gives this band charm. Also, this song, along with a few others on the EP contain clean vocals.

The clean vocals pleasantly caught me off guard. The song was so heavy and typically, most deathcore band's hardly feature any cleans in their music, so I really appreciated this unique twist to the music. It contrasts so well to the heavy vocals and adds some different tones and dimension to the notes hit and to the music.

Also, what I really liked about the second track, Recollections, was the movie-clipped introduction of the song. It starts off with some eerie sounds, followed by the line, "They're eating her, then they're going to eat me! Oh my god!" (I did a little research to find out this was from a movie called "Troll 2", a B movie from the early 90s; cheesy horror movies are a soft spot of mine!). This introduction is awesome because it's a good way to draw listeners in; it definitely drew me in because I wanted to hear more, and the creepy factor was a bonus! This song also featured clean vocals, which when incorporated with heavy deathcore vocal growls, makes for the unique sound on Purge that I mentioned earlier in this review. This is definitely a trademark of this emerging band.

The next track in comparison to the other two, was a little weaker. But, it's also one of the earlier songs the band recorded. This just goes to show the growth they've had during such a short time period. When discovering new bands, I always keep a keen eye out for progression and growth, and Burried by Lakeshore definitely exhibits this growth in their music. I found this song to be a little more generic sounding than the other two, but this just goes to show how this band discovered their identity a little more, and listeners could really hear this on this EP.

Lastly, Crown the Wretched, the last song off the Purge EP featured pig squeal vocals, which the other songs didn't have. I really liked this because it added another heavy element to the EP. The song also ends with the fading sound of rain, which brings up the imagery of a dark storm. This adds another facet of darkness to the theme, and is a gentle conclusion to a heavy album that listeners rocked out to.

All in all, Purge is a solid EP from Buried by Lakeshore. It definitely isn't a polished and flawless sounding record, so if you're looking for that, look elsewhere. But what I do see is a rough-around-the -edges charm and A LOT of potential. Look out for this band in the Toronto deathcore/ metal scene and keep them on your radar; I see a lot of greatness coming from them in the future.

3.5 our of 5 shiny stars for Purge - I really enjoyed it!
