A Metal Legend Dies

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, 49, has died due to liver failure.

The guitarist of the iconic thrash metal band died on Thursday at Hemet Valley Medical Center, wife by his side, after being bit by a spider.

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman of Slayer, shown performing at the Empire Polo Club on April 23, 2011, in Indio, Calif., had battled medical issues for two years after being bitten by a spider. He died Thursday at age 49.

"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11 a.m. [Thursday] morning near his Southern California home," said a post on Slayer's official Facebook page and website regarding the death of Hanneman.

Hanneman was recovering from the near-fatal bite, which caused him to contract flesh eating disease.

It hasn't been confirmed whether his liver failure was directly caused by the bite, but there are speculations that it was linked to his death.
