Not Biting the Hand That Feeds: Meet The Feed

What's that glorious music that I hear? It's Chuck Berry! It's The Strokes! No - it's The Feed!

The Feed is a 4-piece rock band from St.Louis, Missouri, having been together for over 5 years. They've already released one EP and are about to release another come August 5 entitled "Outsider."

"We actually have a lot of songs written but we didn't release because of all the lineup changes. We were changing and it just didn't represent who we were as a band; thinking back, I wish we released them," said member Dave Grelle over a phone interview with The Rock Spot.

Grelle says that this 9-track work is the band's first EP since 2008 due to releasing so many songs in between one track at a time. Grelle says that this is because The Feed is more of a "live" band than a recorded band.

What does he mean by this?

"We're known for our live performances; there's a raw charm," he said.

Another unique feature about The Feed being a "live band" (as they label themselves) is the fact that the band tries to record their songs in as few takes as possible to ensure authenticity. Grelle says that with improvisation and structure, their music will get the best of both worlds.

But when it comes to The Feed's music, they dictate their own choices because they aren't signed to any labels right now. However, their song "All That I Want" was featured on a Tower Groove Records compilation album, which Grelle says was even cooler as it was the first song on that album.

Since their new EP will be self-distributed, The Feed will have full control without restriction in content and creativity, "It comes down to whose hands your music gets to," said Grelle. Fun fact: they'll also be selling vinyl copies of "Outsider" once it comes out.

When it comes to working on the album, all members of The Feed have the ability to play at least three to four instruments, like piano or saxophone for instance. This is partially what gives The Feed's music originality because the band utilizes these talents, and adds unconventional instruments to their rock music.

"Our sax player, Ben, would be most likely to break a world record for playing sax. He's got Kenny G. on his side and could hold a long note...he's planning to do it underwater," laughs Grelle. He's kidding, of course.

Anyway, for their writing process, it's mot necessarily a battle of which comes first: music or lyrics. David Grelle says that sometimes he and the band write the music then the lyrics, but this isn't always the case. But this doesn't mean the band doesn't take lyrics lightly! Grelle says that they are an important element to their music, whether some lyrics come out naturally, or take some time.

So get stoked for the August 5 release of The Feed's "Outsider" - but don't expect the band to smash any of their instruments while playing the new material live, "Our instruments are too expensive to smash!" However, what you can expect, according to Grelle, is high energy rock n' roll.

The Feed is: David Grelle, Ben Reece, Kevin Bowers, and Jordan Heimburger
