Computers, Tablets, and Weezer?

Would you camp out on the cold, dusty floors of your local mall just to get free concert tickets for your favourite band? Well, 2,500 people did that last Saturday at the grand opening of the Microsoft Store in Mississauga's Square One mall for free Weezer tickets. The first lucky 200 people to show up got the much coveted meet and greet passes.

Weezer's free show last Sunday was at Brampton's Powerade Centre, just outside of Toronto. Weezer hasn't been to Toronto since last summer, but many fans said that they'd jump at the opportunity to see Weezer play again, and for many, for their first time.  Although the show was free, the fans who earned their tickets were guaranteed admission for the show.

The majority of guests that I spoke to arrived around 10 p.m. the Friday night prior, and one super-fan even waited around since 11 a.m. the Friday morning; yes, you read that right, morning.

Torontonian radio station, 102.1 The Edge (also the station I intern at) attended the event, as well as the actual Weezer concert, and cheered up sleepy/excited fans with prizes and chatter. Local Edge personality Melani Mariani emceed the event, as well as gave away prizes, like a signed Weezer guitar.

Here is one of the winners happily showing off his signed Weezer guitar.

The unveiling of the new Microsoft Store (ironically a few stores down from their competition, the Apple Store) was a huge event, not only for fans of Weezer, but for the Mississauga community. The soon-to-be 93-year-old mayor, Hazel McCallion, cut the ceremonial ribbon for the new store, and even delivered a message to the community from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper about the new store.
